Northern Hawk Owl spotted in "Adazi"
At the end of October, Northern Hawk Owl - a rare visitor during winter in Latvia - was spotted in the protected landscape area "Adazi".
This bird of prey is active only during the day and is usually seen perching in some observation point - on a top of a small tree or pole, watching for the prey - small rodents and birds.
Northern Hawk-Owl is found in the northern part of Eurasia and North America. It is a non-migratory owl that usually stays within its breeding range, but some birds in winter regularly wander to the south, even reaching Denmark, Germany and Poland in Europe.
Northern Hawk Owl has been observed in the protected landscape area "Adazi" for the fourth year. The largest number - three hibernating birds - were present in the winter of 2012 - 2013.
